Five Questions to Ask Yourself Before Playing Anywhere Online
Most of what we write here is about the games and the industry. This piece is about the person holding the phone. Before you open any gambling app or site, run through these five questions. They take a couple of minutes and they are the most useful habit we know.
Is this legal and licensed where I am?
Rules differ hugely between countries and even between states or provinces. A platform that looks professional may be unlicensed in your area, which means no regulator to turn to if a withdrawal stalls or your data is mishandled. If you cannot quickly confirm the licence on the regulator's own website, that is your answer.
How much am I prepared to lose today?
Not "how much do I hope to win", but the amount you could lose in full without it affecting bills, savings or anyone who depends on you. Say the number out loud or write it down. If you notice yourself rounding it up, pause.
When will I stop?
Pick an end time and set an alarm. Decide, too, what happens if you are ahead: many people find it easier to leave when they have agreed in advance to stop at a certain point either way.
Why am I playing right now?
Boredom, stress, loneliness, a bad day, a recent loss you want to recover: these are the moods in which sessions tend to run long and decisions get worse. If the honest answer is one of them, consider doing something else first, even just a walk.
What will I do if it goes badly?
Have a plan before you need it. That might be logging off and telling someone, using a deposit limit or time-out tool, or contacting a support service. Knowing your next step in advance makes it far easier to take.
Make it a routine
Some readers keep these questions as a note on their phone's home screen. Others turn them into a rule with a friend. However you do it, the point is simple: the platform has a plan for your session, so you should have one too. If you find the answers getting harder to give honestly, that is a signal worth listening to.
