From Liberty Bell to Touchscreen: A Short History of the Slot Machine

Slot machine, toy and slot machine toy

Few inventions have travelled as far from their origins as the slot machine. What began as a mechanical curiosity in a bar is now a vast digital industry. Tracing the journey explains a lot about why slots look and behave the way they do today.

The mechanical era

The machine usually credited as the ancestor of the modern slot is the Liberty Bell, built by Charles Fey in San Francisco around the end of the 19th century. It had three spinning reels, a lever and symbols such as horseshoes, stars, card suits and a cracked bell. Its automatic payout mechanism was the key innovation, and imitations soon appeared across the United States.

Fruit, gum and the law

As gambling restrictions tightened in various places, some machines were adapted to dispense chewing gum or sweets, with fruit symbols matching the flavours. Cherries, lemons and plums have stayed on reels ever since, long after the original reason was forgotten. The nickname "fruit machine", still common in Britain, comes from this period.

Electricity arrives

In the mid-20th century, electromechanical machines replaced many purely mechanical parts. They allowed larger hoppers, automatic payouts of bigger amounts and new features. The lever remained, increasingly as decoration, which is how slots earned the name "one-armed bandit".

The video revolution

From the 1970s onwards, video screens and microprocessors changed everything. Reels became images, and random number generators replaced physical stops. Designers were suddenly free to add more reels, more lines and bonus games that no mechanical machine could have held.

Online and mobile

When online casinos appeared in the 1990s, slots moved with them. Smartphones later put them in everyone's pocket. Today's games feature cinematic themes, cascading reels, licensed brands and gamified lobbies, and new titles are released at a remarkable pace.

What has stayed the same

Through all these changes, the essence has not moved: a stake, a random result and the anticipation in between. The technology has made that moment faster, louder and more accessible than ever, which is part of why modern regulators pay such close attention to slot design. Knowing the history is a good reminder that behind every new feature sits the same simple game of chance.
